From Handbook to Scripture

READING: GENESIS 41

Two years after the incident with the butler and baker, the Lord troubled Pharaoh with a disturbing dream that cried out for an interpretation. It was then that the butler recalled Joseph’s ability to interpret dreams and informed Pharaoh about him. When Pharaoh summoned Joseph, the Hebrew’s fortunes changed suddenly and dramatically. Not only was he granted the ability to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams, but he also was given the wisdom to know how to act in the most effective way to avert the disastrous consequences of the coming famine in Egypt. In the course of only a few hours, Joseph was elevated from imprisonment to the position of prime minister in Egypt.

Prayer: Lord, You are able to bring a person or a nation down in a day and to raise them up suddenly at Your good pleasure. All things are in Your hands, and I want to learn to take this to heart when I find myself discouraged and disheartened.

Meditation passage: verses 16, 25, 28

Proclaiming His Salvation

(Affirmation)

God, I want Your Word to be deeply implanted in me so that I not only know the truth but also express it in the way I live.

My soul waits in hope for the Lord;
He is my help and my shield.
My heart rejoices in Him,
Because I trust in His holy name.
Let Your unfailing love be upon us, O Lord,
Even as we put our hope in You.
(Psalm 33:20–22)

Take a moment to affirm the truth of these words from Scripture, and ask God to make them a growing reality in your life.

I want to be an example for other believers in speech, in behavior, in love, in faith, and in purity. (1 Timothy 4:12)

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation.
(Isaiah 52:7; Nahum 1:15)

Lord, I praise You for the light of Christ and that all things will become visible in Him. You are my life and the length of my days, and I ask that I would be an example for others. May I proclaim Your salvation.

The Attributes of God

Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for everything in heaven and earth is Yours. Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom, and You are exalted as head over all. Both riches and honor come from You, and You are the ruler of all things. In Your hand is power and might to exalt and to give strength to all. Therefore, my God, I give You thanks and praise Your glorious name. All things come from You, and I can only give You what comes from Your hand.
(1 Chronicles 29:11–14)

Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. (Psalm 45:6)

The Works of God

Apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, being witnessed by the law and the prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. For there is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. (Romans 3:21–24)

When we were helpless, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly. For rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6–8)

My Relationship to God

No one who waits for You will be ashamed, but those who are treacherous without cause will be ashamed. Show me Your ways, O Lord, teach me Your paths; lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation, and my hope is in You all day long. (Psalm 25:3–5)

“I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

The Character I Want to Cultivate

I will be strong and courageous, being careful to obey Your word; I will not turn from it to the right or to the left, that I may act wisely wherever I go. (Joshua 1:7)

I will take courage and not be afraid, for the Lord Jesus is with me. (Mark 6:50)

My Relationship to Others

Just as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we who are many are one body in Christ and individually members of one another. And we have different gifts, according to the grace given to us. (Romans 12:4–6)

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. And there are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all people. But to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. (1 Corinthians 12:4–7)

Level 2 > Loving God Completely

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” On these two commandments depend the whole Law and Prophets.
(Matthew 22:37–40)
